Free song writing tips

What should you write about? I hope this free song writing tips will help you to select the theme for your song.

Many people experience the most difficult part of songwriting is selecting what their song should be about, what theme should they choose for their song? Of course there are a million themes to choose from, so which should you go for?

I can’t tell you which specific theme you should choose, but my advice is you should write about something you know. If you know a lot about spending time in the nature, you could write about finding peace on the top of the mountain, or sitting around the fireplace in the woods. If you know a lot about partying down town you could write about this. If you’ve lost your lover you could write about that theme. Why is it so important to write about something you know?

If you write about themes you know little or nothing about the listener will often feel it is not real. The passion will be missing, and the listener can often feel something is wrong without be able to point out what it is.

If you write about something you know, you will be using the right words at the right places. The listeners will feel this is the real stuff, and you will come through as believable. On the other hand, if you write about themes you don’t know the listeners will feel the opposite. If you write about the life on the farm, and you never have left Manhattan, you will probably use the pictures wrong and something will be wrong or to simple about your description. It will come through as a postcard, and not the real thing.

Of course you can use pictures about something you don’t have experience about. If you feel lonesome, you can say something like “I feel like a lonely man on a spaceship”, even if you never have been out in space.

My point is the core substance of your song must have been “lived”. In the example above, you must have felt loneliness.
