Where to go for lyric ideas?

Can anyone or anything inspire you, an inspiration that creates lyric ideas? Are you inspired to write a song by an event in your life?

Maybe you´re just simply walking down the street and witness something out of the blue that you end up thinking “that would make a great song!” and then you just write about it? Well, sometimes the lyric ideas comes that way.

We sometimes hear well-known songwriters say they wrote their song just because they were inspired by a certain someone or something. And then come up with a title in their head and try to write the song after.

Inspiration to a song can come in so many forms, all you have to do is keep your eyes moving, your head working, and your heart open. Throughout the ages, songwriters have found inspiration in…
  • LOVE
  • ANGER
  • SADNESS
  • FUNNY SITUATIONS
  • DEATH
  • RELATIONSHIPS
  • THE WORLD & POLITICS
  • INSPIRATION ITSELF: SUCH AS A CERTAIN PERSON, OR RELIGION

Lets look at an example, John Lennon. What was his inspiration? Where did he get his songwriting ideas? Many people will say that Lennon was moved by the human spirit. Whether that spirit belonged to his wife and sons, politics, or the way of the world at any given moment, Lennon captured shapshots of humanity that few songwriters have been able to create before or since.

Another contemporary songwriting great is Alanis Morrisette. Throughout two releases, Morissette delves deep within herself and pulls out emotions so raw they’re stunning. Her inspiration is obviously very different from Lennon’s, but just as songworthy.

Inspiration can come in many shapes and colors, you just have to keep your mind open for it. To become a master in writing song lyrics it´s important to keep your creativity muscle active.

I teach my student to practice to see new ideas every day. I tell them to always cary a note book and write down the ideas when they show up, tell them to make a habit to daily look for new lyric ideas.

I recommend you to do the same, (and yes, I cary my notebook everyday too:)) It can be a funny situation you see on your way to work, a person you meet in your lunch break or maybe a beautiful picture you see in a window, a sentence in a film etc.

The more you practice this, the easier the good ideas will show up, and after a while the great ideas will start to show their face. Just keep on track and write down lyric ideas. After a while you might be ready to make the world sing!
