Music for TV or Film: Elements of Success

music for tv
Many songwriters and composers can make plenty of money when their work is used in the television and film industry.

Going about getting your work into the field may be difficult and you may have many questions regarding this musical niche. I aim to answer some of the questions in the FAQ section below.

First lets look at what skills are required if you plan a career in writing music for film and TV.music for tv

You had better love to write scores!

You’ve got to have the love of writing music flowing through your soul just as blood flows through your veins. If you don’t have that love for it, the most basic element of success is already gone.music for tv

Some musicians love to play; others love to create the music that is played. For the film & TV show industry you’ll need to be willing to write the scores. Loving that aspect is going to be important in this field.music for tv

Money is important, but it should not be the motivation!

If you just want to make money, go learn how to hawk stocks or sell real estate, or be a banker. If you want to make music, then make it and make it the first reason for the motivation.

Music is the motivator. Produce the best music for the pure love of music. You’ll find the dollar making is much easier if the music is the motivation.

Keep yourself connected!

This cannot be stressed enough. Join the right associations, sign up for blogs, and join music communities on the web. Stay on top of the industry by reading the articles and remaining in the know. Attend seminars. Stretch the mind, create connections.

Know how to conduct business!

It is your life work, your soul in musical form. Do not allow yourself to remain ignorant of how to protect it, manage it, and get income from it.

Know the basics on contracts. Consult an attorney of your choosing if you are not certain of a contract or contract point. Conduct your business like a businessman. Do not let emotion enter in. You’ve heard the expression, “it’s not personal, it’s just business”, there’s truth to that.

If you let it get personal, you could make a critical error. Remain detached and view any contract with a critical eye and a trusted and well-educated 2nd opinion.

Keep your music as accessible as you can!

People may be hearing of you, can they find you? Can they sample your music? Can they buy your music? Get a website up. Create a myspace, a facebook and a youtube. Put your music up on itunes and get articles about yourself published in local ezines and other distribution services.

In short, keep your name out there, and keep your music accessible. Get a CD or DVD demo done. Send it around to any prospects that ask. Make sure this shows your ability as a composer. And a truly superb composer will find that the prospect doesn’t skip tracks. He or she will be taken in by the complete demo and listen to the whole thing. Make sure you have a cd or dvd that will get the prospect mesmerized and enraptured. music for tv

Question: Does the piece for a television show or movie have to be strictly a musical score?

Answer: Not at all! There are lots of television shows and movies that use just musical scores but many more use pieces with vocals as well. The demand for original songs is increasing as more and more movies and shows are being produced for a whole new market such as pieces that are being created for the internet to name just one. music for tv

Question: Do I have to use a professional recording studio in order to have my music heard by those that matter?

Answer: Many successful song and music writers do not utilize the services of a professional recording studio. You can use a well-polished home recording in order to have your work considered for a movie or television project. There is no need to have numerous tracks with a live orchestra in order to have your work used in the entertainment industry.

Question: How much money are we talking about when considering a career writing songs and music for the television and movie industry?

Answer: The amount will depend entirely upon what type of production buys your work and the amount of the budget with which they are working.

You earn money in two ways. First you make a profit off the licensing fee, which is paid right to the artist up front, and then you have the royalty fees for the performance. You collect this money by one of the performing rights organizations such as SESAC, BMI or ASCAP to name three major players.

If your music is bought by a small independent production company, the money you make will be considerably less than if you sold your work to a major studio or television production company

Question: Can I make money from writing advertising jingles?

Answer: There are some songwriters that write exclusively for advertising agencies. If your song becomes one that is popular and the ad brings in added revenue because of it, it helps to cement your reputation as a jingle writer with which to work. You get a royalty fee each time a commercial plays your jingle and that can quickly add up to big money in a short period of time.

Question: Can I make a career out of writing music and lyrics solely for the entertainment industry?

Answer: If you have the talent and the drive, you can have a lucrative career in writing words and music for the entertainment industry. No matter if a movie is a blockbuster hit or shown at a movie festival to a chosen few and whether or not a television show gets picked up as a weekly series, all have one thing in common and that is that you can be assured that some sort of music will be needed.

A hit song in a movie can make the difference between lifelong earnings and a flash in the pan. If your song becomes popular or even wins an award for a major motion picture, you can be sure that your stock in the industry will soar and your services will be in much demand. music for tvmusic for tv
