Song Title

Why the song title is so important?
Many songwriters likes to start out with the title when theyĻre about to write a song. I know very successful writers that wonīt write a single note before they got the title ready. They know how important the title is. They know that creating a good title is one important songwriting skills.

The title will be the symbol for your tune. Itīs what people identify with your song. Itīs what the DJ says before he plays your tune, and itīs what the buyer will ask for in the record store.

It will also be the first thing the publisher/A&R person sees when he picks up your cd or opens your mp3 file. The title will (hopefully) be the thing everyone remembers. This is why the title should be prominent, repeated and obvious from just one hearing of your song, it will represent your song.

Off course there are exemptions. Many huge hits havenīt an obvious title, but the majority of hits have the title stated clear in the chorus. My experience is that if the title isnīt prominent in the song, the odds are highly against it becoming a hit. The best place to put the title is in the first and/or last line of the chorus.

How to find a good title?
Good titles are everywhere around you. Start looking out for action words or short phrases that appeals to you. Often you can find good titles in attention-grabbing newspaper headlines.

You can also find good titles in everyday phrases or slightly twists from these. Look at any lists of top 10 songs and you will find tons of titles which have been created this way.

Begin to make a habit from looking out for good titles. They can show up on some adds, in conversations or from magazines. Just remember to write them down when they pops up or they can be lost forever :)
